With treats in hand a few feet from your dog’s bed, say “BED” and walk with the treat to the bed. Repeat command “BED” and point to their bed.
In this step, you are letting your dog know what you want them to do. You want them to go to their bed so you walk there.
In addition, you are associating the verbal command “BED” with this action. Be clear and consistent with your actions.
The first time your dog goes to the bed, give your dog the treat, PRAISE and REWARD them. Repeat several times.
This step lets your dog know you like their actions. When they successfully go to bed, they get a Good Boy, Good Girl verbal praise and a reward of a tasty treat.
The more you do this, the more you dog will get the picture.
Now, say “BED” and point to the bed. Your dog should go to the bed and lay down. When they do, PRAISE and REWARD them. If not, go back to earlier steps.
This is where you get to the final result you are looking for. Instead of saying the “BED” command after your dog goes to the corner, you are changing it to trigger your dog’s action.
You want your dog to hear “BED” then go to their bed. Pointing or some other encouragement may be needed as they progress.
