How to Teach a Dog to Roll Over is a classic trick. If you follow the Simple Athenas Pets 3 Step System below, you will have it down in no time.

Your dog should have a solid grasp on the DOWN command before you start this trick.

Some dogs will not want roll on their back because they feel vulnerable. Other dogs are happy to oblige. Keep trying and you can and will succeed.

Teaching this trick involves having a really tasty treat that your dog will follow with their head. Once you find this magic “treat” you will be halfway there.

As with all the dog tricks, be patient and consistent in your actions and training. Keep a smile on your face and it will make things go so much smoother.

Teaching a dog to roll over can be taught by anyone from an elementary schooler to a senior citizen.

No onto the steps…

Get your dog into the DOWN position. This is the end of the DOWN command. Don’t PRAISE or REWARD at this time.

The purpose of this step is to get to the starting position. It is easier if your dog already knows the down command, but you can start from scratch with this trick if you’re patient.

The reason not to praise or reward at this time is because there is more to come. You don’t want your dog to think they already completed the trick at down.

With a treat in your hand, slowly move your hand in a circular motion from your dog’s nose to behind their head and around to the other side, saying “ROLL OVER.”

As your dog’s head follows the treat, the rest of their body will follow. If you are not getting them to follow, find a tastier treat.

Your goal in step 2 is to get your dog to start the roll over process and roll to their back. It really is that simple.

When your dog follows your hand around their head with their body, PRAISE and REWARD them. You want to praise them with a Good Boy / Good Girl and give a small treat when they make progress toward the roll over.

Each time, make sure they go further to a complete roll over before treating and praising.

Once you teach your dog to roll over by following the treat it’s time to move onto the follow on section below.

So, now that they do it with the treat, begin doing it with just your hand, then just the command.

Always, always, use the “ROLL OVER” command to ensure association with this trick.

If you have a dog clicker, you should immediately “click” when your dog performs the action you want. This gives instant gratification and reinforces the positive action your dog took.

How to Teach a Dog to Roll Over is a trick you can do. Most dogs will take to it quickly.
