“I Can’t Stand My Dog’s Barking!” I hear this all too often. It’s one of the most common “bad” behaviors that owners want to stop their dogs from doing.

I know as well as anyone, it can be really stressful to train your dog to stop barking. I actually wrote a story about my experience doing it in the post titled “How to Stop Dog Barking – 3 Things Not to Do”.

In short, I talked about how one of the biggest changes that helped me push on and be successful was the change I made in my training sessions. Being positive just makes everything easier!

Barking Dogs Can Be Stressful

As you can tell from my experience, I understand how it can be stressful to bark train your dog. There are plenty of reasons why this is:

  • The internet has a lot of methods for training out there and sometimes it can be confusing
  • Your dog might not listen right away
  • You don’t have a ton of extra time every day
  • Everyone in your home literally can’t stand your dog’s barking
  • There is pressure to get quick results
  • It’s easy to get frustrated and angry
  • And many more

If this list isn’t enough to drive you up a wall, I honestly don’t know what is.

Anyways, going into any training process already knowing that you’re going to face challenges is tough. However, I’m here to tell you that there is one magic thing you can do that will make the whole process so much easier!

Can’t Stand Your Dog’s Barking? Try Making Trainings Fun!

If I could recommend one thing that anyone looking to train their dog do, it would be to make their trainings fun. If you go into training your dog like it’s a job or a chore, you’re going to be miserable. End of story.

Some of the best progress you will make with your dog is when BOTH of you are in a happy state and ready to learn. And, since your dog’s energy and emotions kind of mirror yours, it is super important for you to set the tone.

I have literally witnessed too many times where an owner goes to train their dog and gets frustrated in the first 15 minutes of the session. Then, they get angry at the dog. Next, they’re angry at themselves. In the end, they didn’t accomplish ANYTHING! Basically, they got their dog annoyed, they annoyed themselves and they might have even made their dog’s barking problem worse. This is just a horrible situation to be in.

Again, I beg you to approach your training in a different way. Your dog will appreciate this, and when you start to actually be successful with the training, you will too! Just watch! You will go from “I Can’t Stand My Dog’s Barking” to “Who Are You and What Did You Do With My Dog?”

Next time that you take your dog for a quick training session, no matter what trick or behavior you’re teaching them, keep positive the WHOLE time. Let me know what a big difference it makes in the comments below!

Final Thoughts On Fun Training Sessions

In my final words, I would like to leave you with just one piece of advice. Don’t get angry at your dog. They will just shut down and stop learning. You don’t want that when you’re training them. In fact, they should be your best friend and you should treat them as such. Just like you might not be a dog training expert (I know I wasn’t when I started and in many ways I’m still not) your dog is not a trick expert either.

The best things that you can do are:

  • Keep Calm
  • Stay Positive
  • Give Your Dog Encouragement
  • Reinforce Good Behavior
  • Celebrate Small Wins With Your Dog
