Potty Bells Training – First Step:

Some people take the dog bells out of the box and start shaking them with their dog nearby. While that’s fun to do, it can also frighten more timid dogs.

You know your dog best, so take it easy if needed.

The goal of the first step is for your dog to get used to the bells and to be OK with them around. You’ll be moving backwards from the start if your dog doesn’t like them and stays away.

So, it is best to move them slowly, maybe even set them on the ground so you dog can sniff them, touch them and generally get a good feeling they are no threat.

The Second Step to Potty Bells Training:

So, your dog is comfortable with the bells from step one?

Well, now it’s time to get the bells hung on the doorknob of the door your dog uses to go outside to go potty.

When you’re ready to take your dog out, go to the door and encourage your dog to ring them before you open the door.

If your dog doesn’t get the hint, after 15-20 seconds, ring the bells yourself and take them outside for a potty.

Eventually, they will get the hang of ringing the bells to go outside. When they do ring the bells praise and reward them.

Final Step of Training:

Now your dog is ringing the bells to go out for a potty and also just to go outside.

The key to potty bells training is you want your dog ONLY to ring the bells if they need to go potty. When they go out, they should go potty and return to the house.

As a side note, we’re all for playing with your dog and taking them out. We just use the potty bells exclusively for potty time.

So the way to accomplish this is to only praise and reward your dog after they rang the bells to go out AND also went potty.

Praise of “Good Girl, Good Boy!” and a reward, which is a treat that they like. See our Dog Praise and Reward Article for more details.
