So, should we use treats or food with potty bells? This is a great question that we got from a dog owner currently training their dog with potty bells.
Anyways, the answer is simple, but it might not be what you’re suspecting.
Well, should you use food with potty bells? Let’s think about it for a second. When training your dog to use their doggie doorbell, you want to do all of these:
- Get your dog comfortable with the bells
- Make them ring the bells on your arm then on the door
- Praise and Reward successes (i.e. going potty after ringing the bells)
Now, the only way you’ll get your dog to do some of these things, especially if they’re a little shy is to reward them with some type of treat. For example, this is kind of like when you want a small child to eat all of their dinner. In this case, you might want to tell them that they’ll get dessert after to motivate them.
The Answer
Of course! You can use food with your potty bells if that’s what works!
By the way, our free eBook shows you exactly how to get your dog to ring the bells to go potty. You can click here to download it.
Well, Can I Use Treats?
Anyways, we kind of covered this in the first section. If you want to use treats, you are more than welcome to. In fact, treats are really handy to have around instead of food. Although we recommend treats, if food works better to motivate your dog, we would actually recommend that.

You have to be the judge. What does your dog like better? Oh yeah, you can also pick up a set of potty bells here. They’ll help your dog let you know when they have to go.
