STEP 2 to Dog Door Bell Training is ringing the potty bell by the door. It is the follow on from the earlier – you guessed it – STEP 1 to Dog Door Bell Training article.
The gist of this step is to get your dog to use these potty bells to grab your attention rather than jump on you, stare, or worse, do nothing at all.

STEP 2 to Dog Door Bell Training begins:
The next thing you are tasked with in this training process is to hang the training bells from your desired doorknob. The Athenas Pets Dog Doorbells will fit on any doorknob or handle (the top bells may have to be removed and replaced from the keychain as shown below to fit around some smaller pull handles).
Once you have the dog bells hanging from the door of your choice, you are ready to move on. Also, you can always use multiple doorbells to hang from the doorknobs of several exit doors around your home.
PRAISE = Saying “Good Girl/Boy!” and petting dog. (Show them some love!)
REWARD = Giving your dog a small treat or kibble as a reward.
Incorporate the Bells into Your Potty Routine:
To effectively get your dog to understand that they need to ring the bells for them to go potty, you should bring them to the door you have hung the training bells from and encourage them to ring them like you did in step 1.
If they do, PRAISE them and take them outside to do their business. When they accomplish what you took them outside to do, REWARD them. If not, take them back inside and try again at your next usual potty time interval.
If your dog doesn’t ring the bells after a little while, ring them yourself and take them outside for their potty time. After a few times, your dog should start to associate ringing the bell with going outside to do their business.
Remember, You Need to be Patient:
Some dogs will get it right away and others will take some time to learn. Always be supportive of your pup! It may get a little frustrating at times, but a positive attitude will always take you a long way when training any animal!
If your dog is having some trouble learning, you can try putting a treat outside the door in plain sight of your dog so they can see that you left the treat out there. Now wait until your pup rings the bell before letting them outside to retrieve the treat.
No matter what the dog does in this situation, do not let them have the treat unless they ring the bell. If you don’t have time to sit there any longer, you can take them outside but be sure to pick up the treat and DO NOT PRAISE or REWARD your dog.
Repeat all of step 2 until your dog is ringing the bell every time they go outside to potty.
STEP 2 to Dog Door Bell Training – Am I Ready to Move On?
Eventually they will start to ring the bell on their own. It is important that you take them outside to reinforce their behavior of ringing the bell. Once your dog is ringing the bell on their own to go outside, you are ready to move on to the next step.
You may want to wait a little while to proceed to make sure your dog has the hang of it. This is up to your discretion, but we recommend at least one whole day of your dog ringing the bells on their own before moving on to step 3.
