Teach a Dog to Close a Door is a cool trick to teach your dog to help you close an open door. In fact, it’s a necessary trick after you teach your dog to open a door.
This is much easier than opening a door. It only requires a bump with your dog’s paw or nose. If you want to combine the two tricks, learn how to teach a dog to open a door.
STEP 1
With a door open, get your dog to touch the door with their nose or paw. Encourage them by tapping the door with your hand.
The purpose of this step is to get your dog to push on the open door. It can be the refrigerator door, front door or even a cabinet door.
You want them to understand they can make the door move with their action.
STEP 2
Eventually your dog will get the hint that you want them to push on the door. When they do, say “CLOSE,” PRAISE and REWARD your pup.
In this step, you want two things to happen.
First, you want your dog to close the door and connect your verbal “CLOSE” command to this action.
Next, you want to make sure they have a positive experience by giving them a verbal praise (Good Boy, Good Girl) and a well deserved treat. You want them to be anxious to earn a treat next time you ask.
STEP 3
As they get this nailed down, move further away from your dog and the open door and give the command “CLOSE,” PRAISE and REWARD successes.
The goal of this step is to get your dog to close the door when you are not in front of them and guiding.
Over time, you want to get to where you can say close and maybe point and your dog will understand and take action!
