How to Teach a Dog to Fetch Newspaper is one of our favorite dog tricks.
Don’t feel like going out to get the paper in the morning, don’t worry. This trick will have your dog getting the paper for you, while you get the coffee started.
Don’t make the newspaper too big for a little dog’s mouth. “TAKE IT” and “DROP IT” are a couple tricks you should learn first.
With the Newspaper in hand, place it in your dog’s mouth and say, “TAKE IT” – PRAISE and REWARD every success.
The reason of this step is to get your dog to get the newspaper in their mouth. When they do, you want to do two things.
First, you want to associate the “TAKE IT” verbal command with your dog getting the newspaper.
Next, you want to let them know they did the right thing. You do this by praising with a hearty Good Boy, Good Girl and giving them a tasty treat.
Once STEP 1 is complete, put the Newspaper in their face and make them smell it and PRAISE and REWARD them. Then, toss the Newspaper a couple feet from you on the ground and say “NEWSPAPER”.
This is to associate the “NEWSPAPER” verbal queue to the newspaper and your dog getting it.
Even though this is only from a foot or two away, they are learning as we have further distances to come.
When they do it right, make sure to praise and reward your dog. This will make them want to do this again and again for you.
Once they get the Newspaper, they don’t get the treat REWARD unless they come back to you with the paper.
Be excited, have a treat in hand and PRAISE and REWARD them when they do. Say “DROP IT” if needed.
In this step, you make your dog come back to you with the newspaper and only reward them when they give it to you.
Gradually increase the distance the Newspaper is away and then get your dog to go out to the sidewalk and get the paper with just the “NEWSPAPER” command.
How to Teach a Dog to Fetch Newspaper is not too difficult, but it does take some time. Keep up the effort and stay positive and you will get this trick under your belt too.
