How to Teach Your Dog to Fetch a Drink is one of the more interesting tricks to teach your dog. If you have a small dog, it may not be practical, as your dog’s mouth is the only thing they have to carry the drink.

How cool is it to have your dog fetch you a cold beverage on a hot day, or any day for that matter? With this command you can have them bring you a beer, soda or some other drink.

The “OPEN DOOR” dog trick can be used first and the “DROP” dog trick is good after your dog gets the drink so they can give it up.

STEP 1

We’ll use a refrigerator in this trick. Make sure the beverage can is clear of other stuff and low enough so your dog can get it easily.

We’ll start with the door open. Put the beverage in their mouth and say, “FETCH” PRAISE successes.

In this step, you put the can in your dog’s mouth and say “FETCH.” This associates the verbal command with the can in their mouth.

When your dog holds the can in their mouth, verbally praise them (Good Boy, Good Girl) and give them a treat.

STEP 2

When they get step 1 wired, take few steps back and say, “FETCH” and have your dog grab the can with their mouth and bring it to you. Say “DROP” and when they do PRAISE and REWARD them.

In this step, you say “FETCH” first and then expect your dog to get the can in their mouth themselves.

If you have done enough of step 1, to associate putting the can in their mouth with “FETCH” command, they will get it.

When they have it in their mouth, say “DROP” and then praise and reward them. You want to have them coming back for more.

STEP 3

Now back way up further from the refrigerator and do the same thing. Say, “FETCH” and have your dog grab the can with their mouth and bring it to you. Say “DROP.” When they do PRAISE and REWARD them.

The goal of this step is to get completely out of the way and have your dog perform the action.

You say “FETCH,” your dog goes and gets the can and brings it to you. Then, you say “DROP” and your dog releases the can. Finally, you praise and reward them for their efforts to let them know they did a great job.
