To Teach Your Dog to Find Keys is one of the cool tricks to teach dogs.

Finding your keys is similar to fetching your keys. Make sure you have a set of keys you don’t mind your dog putting in their mouth.

Learning SIT and STAY first will help, but make sure you’re careful which keys you are using. This is especially true if your dog likes to bite or chew things.

Your dog can start in the seated or standing position. With the keys in your hand jiggling them in front of your dog’s face say, “KEYS.”

When they make an effort to touch or put the keys in their mouth, PRAISE and REWARD them.

In this step you are getting your dog comfortable with the keys. Many dogs won’t think twice, but some may be a bit timid.

In addition, you are starting to associate the verbal “KEYS” command to the keys themselves.

Make sure you give a praise (Good Girl, Good Boy) and a nice treat to your dog when they touch the keys.

Once they get the hang of what the keys are and realize they get a treat for touching or putting them in their mouth, cover the keys with a towel and say “KEYS.”

When they move to get the towel out of way, PRAISE and REWARD them.

The goal of this step is to get your dog to understand the keys are going under the towel and get them when asked.

When you say keys and your dog goes for the towel, you have completed this step.

Always praise and reward successes.

Now, with your dog staying seated, put the keys under the towel on the ground a few feet away and say “KEYS.”

When they go to the keys and get them from under the towel, PRAISE and REWARD them.

In this step you raise the expectations from your dog to go and get the keys under the towel. No treat for just going to the towel.

But, when they are asked with your “KEYS” command and they go get the keys under the towel a few feet away you succeeded.

To Teach Your Dog to Find Keys may be easy or more difficult depending on your pup. But, keep up the persistence with patience and they will eventually get it.

To add more to this trick, try moving the keys further and further away. You can even place them outside of their view to take this trick to the next level.

You’ll never be lost with your trick dog by your side.
