The Affenpinscher dog breed is classified as a toy dog breed. This makes it one of the smaller dog breeds that you will find. The name Affenpinscher is German and stands for monkey terrier. The reason for this unique name is actually because of their expressions.
The history of the Affenpinscher dog breed started very similarly to that of another toy dog the Miniature Schnauzer. They were bred in Germany as a ratter on the farm. If you aren’t familiar with the term ratter in simple terms this means that they chased away rats. They were bred this way throughout the 17th century. Like many dog breeds that were raised as ratters they like to bark a significant amount.
Is the Affenpinscher for you?
The Affenpinscher dog breed is a good smaller dog breed that can adapt to condo or apartment living. This is the case with most toy dog breeds and is no different for the Affenpinscher. Like I briefly mentioned in the previous section Affenpinschers do like to bark sometimes. With the proper training you will be able to limit this.
In addition, the Affenpinscher is towards the middle of the pack when we look at willingness to be trained. They don’t excel in learning new commands but, they also won’t completely ignore you either. Affenpinscher’s aren’t the most energetic of dogs. They enjoy going for long walks and runs but, they don’t mind moderate levels of exercise.
Based on these characteristics, we give the Affenpinscher a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on our Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker.
The Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker takes into account several characteristics of each breed. Items considered are:
- Willingness to be Trained
- How Comfortable they are around People
- Ability to live in a Household Environment.
The most common color for the Affenpinscher dog breed is black. However, they can come in many different colors such as tan, beige, and silver. As we take a look at the Affenpinscher’s height we find that they have a height that ranges anywhere in between 9 and 12 inches. This places them in line with most other dogs within the toy breed category.
Additionally, the Affenpinscher will weigh somewhere in between 7 and 10 pounds. This dog is not bad for snuggling up with and not getting crushed. Again, this weight definitely falls in line with their placement in the toy dog breed category.
The Affenpinscher is a great dog breed especially for smaller home or apartment living. If you do a good job acclimating them with other animals and kids early in their lives you will have a much better time with your pup. Their wiry fur is short enough so they don’t shed very much compared to other breeds.
I hope this helped you better understand the Affenpinscher and their characteristics. Happy Training!
