The Afghan Hound dog breed is a dog breed with some unique and cool hair.  Their hair is what makes them stand out from many of the other breeds out there.  They are not one of the most popular dog breeds but, can be seen in many funny pictures circulating around the internet.

The history of the Afghan Hound dog breed is kind of given away by their name.  They were bred to hunt larger mammals in the mountains of Afghanistan.  The original breed which predated modern times was named the Tazi.  As you look at the modern day Afghan hound they were primarily developed throughout the 19th century in Europe.  Unlike most breeds they were bred to hunt on their own.  This makes them quite free spirited and they enjoy roaming.

Is the Afghan Hound for you?

The Afghan Hound is definitely more for rural and country living due to their larger size and bundles of energy.  They run a lot and will need a significant amount of space to do so.  Also Afghan Hounds do shed a lot and this is something that you definitely need to take into account when deciding.

In addition, Afghan Hounds need a lot of attention especially early in their lives.  This attention comes in the form of training but also acclimating them to other living beings.  This includes dogs and small children that you want your Afghan Hound to coexist with.  As is the case with many larger dogs failing to do this could lead to unwanted behaviors.  Some of these behaviors may include but are not limited to barking, growling, or even biting.  The Afghan Hound also may be a little bit stubborn when it comes to training.  However, when you get their mind working they are capable of learning many new tricks.

Based on these characteristics, we give the Afghan Hound a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on our Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker.

Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker
Afgan Hound 7.5 of 10

The Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker takes into account several characteristics of each breed. Items considered are:

  • Willingness to be Trained
  • How Comfortable they are around People
  • Ability to live in a Household Environment.

Physical Characteristics

The most common colors for the Afghan Hound are black and cream.  Some other varieties will typically include some red within the fur.  As for the Afghan Hound’s height we find that they will fall somewhere between 24 and 30 inches when on all fours.  This makes them a larger sized dog breed.

Additionally, their fur is one of the softest and most luscious out of any dog breed.  This fur has drawn comparisons to human hair.  They are definitely a breed I want to snuggle with in the winter time.  The fur is quite thick and contributes to their heavier weight that falls between 50 and 75 pounds.  They are not the heaviest dogs but, should be considered medium to larger sized dogs.

Final Thoughts

The Afghan Hound is a great dog breed if you have open space to let them roam and run around.  This can be done in multiple ways such as a long walk or run with you or letting them run loose at a dog park.  Don’t be surprised if they hurdle some of the fences though!  You will also never have a lack of attention when with your Afghan Hound.  When you are walking around with them people will almost always stop and ask you questions.  That shows just how special the Afghan Hound dog breed is.
