The Basenji Dog Breed is one with the cutest and funniest types of expressions. In fact, this is one of the most ancient dog breeds when you look at their history. For instance, traces of the earliest Basenji’s can be dated all the way back to 6000 B.C. These traces are shown by ancient carvings in Egyptian pyramids.
However, this was not close to the modern day Basenji and it is not certain what they were used for in Ancient Egypt. They were bred throughout Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Basenji was bred to be a hunting dog during this time. This took place throughout the 19th century where they used their exceptional scent and hearing to chase prey.
Is the Basenji for you?
One of the common characteristics with any hunting dog is that they can sometimes get distracted. Such as, if Basenji’s catch a scent that really interests them they may take off after it. This combined with other factors makes the Basenji relatively difficult to train. Especially when we are talking about socializing them with other animals.
As with almost all dog breeds it is important to get them comfortable with other dogs, animals, and people early in their lives. This is especially true with the Basenji who isn’t particularly known for being friendly with animals outside his boundaries. Therefore, if you are a first time owner it is likely best to steer clear of the Basenji.
