The Chihuahua Dog Breed is a popular dog breed and has a long storied history. Archaeologists argue whether they descended from the Techichi breed or if if is a new breed all its own.
If descended from the Techichi this breed began in the 9th century. Otherwise, our modern Chihuahua came about in Mexico in the 15th century.
Is the Chihuahua for you?
The Chihuahua is a great pet, especially in confined environments. Apartments and Condos are great for them due to their small size.
They however need a lot of training because they can have a sassy or stubborn personality. They have the tendency to bark and be a little yappy. With proper training, this can be minimized.
As with all dog breeds, you need to incorporate them into many of your daily activities. They typically do well with small kids since there is not much risk of the Chihuahua causing harm to the children.
Based on these characteristics, we log the Chihuahua in at 7 out of 10 on our Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker.
The Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker takes into account several characteristics of each breed. Items considered are:
- Willingness to be Trained
- How Comfortable they are around People
- Ability to live in a Household Environment.
The Chihuahua is different than many breeds in that it can be several different colors. Some are solid colors, others just have a dash of different colors here or there.
The typical height of a Chihuahua at adulthood is around 6 inches. They weigh from 3 to 6 pounds even when they’re wet. That puts them in the smallest dog category in our book.
Chihuahua are an awesome choice if you are living in a smaller home or apartment. Due to their small size, you can take them with you wherever you go. Many travel with their owners in a handbag throughout their day.
As you spend more time with your little Chihuahua, you will grow to enjoy their company. Check out other dog breeds on our list.
