The Great Dane dog breed is one of the largest dog breeds in the world.  This makes them appear slightly intimidating to some people.  The reality of the situation is that most Great Danes look scarier than they actually are.

When we take a look back at the history of the Great Dane we find their origins in Germany.  The timeframe around which they were bred took place sometime in the 1600’s.  Like many dogs during this time they were bred to hunt.  They were not hunting your little rodents though.  These big guys were bred to hunt large mammals such as deer, wild boar, and many more.

Is the Great Dane for you?

The Great Dane is a fun choice as a pet.  Their enormous size and calm demeanor makes for a unique dog.  They are typically very receptive to training and enjoy being challenged.  The novice owner should be cautious if they want to make it their first pet.  If you do a poor job training it could lead to unwanted behaviors.

The Great Dane needs a lot of space to roam around and stretch those long legs out.  That is why we don’t recommend them for people who live in small apartments or condos.  They also require a significant amount of training.  This can go for any dog but especially applies with a dog of their size.

Based on these characteristics, we give the Great Dane a rating of 8.5 out of 10 on our Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker

Great Dane 8.5 of 10

The Athenas Pets Household Pet Ranker takes into account several characteristics of each breed. Items considered are:

  • Willingness to be Trained
  • How Comfortable they are around People
  • Ability to live in a Household Environment.

Physical Characteristics

The Great Dane typically comes in two colors.  These colors are black and a brownish color called brindle.  Some Great Danes can actually be a darker blue color though.

As for the Great Danes’ height they tend to be over 3 feet tall when standing on all fours.  Now when they get on those long hind legs they tower over most adults!  This can be intimidating to some but they tend to be very calm dogs.

In addition the Great Danes’ weight is also quite large.  They will usually fall somewhere within the range of 100-200 pounds!  To say the least you don’t want one of these guys falling on top of you.

Final Thoughts

The Great Dane is a very cool dog breed.  One of the most famous cartoon characters of all time Scooby “Scoobert” Doo was based off of a Great Dane.

Not only this but the tallest dog of all time was also a Great Dane.  This dog on all fours was almost 4 feet tall!  If you have some dog training experience and want a fun dog to train the Great Dane could be a fun option. Check out other dog breeds on our list.
